UKAS welcomes the Building a Safer Future Review’s interim report and is pleased to note that Dame Judith has highlighted the need to raise levels of competence, greater quality assurance and simplified regulatory guidance. The report recognises that UKAS already supports Government in the delivery of the Building Regulations and safety of construction products, but UKAS believes that in the areas of fire risk assessment for high risk buildings there are more opportunities where UKAS can provide assurance. As the Government appointed National Accreditation Body UKAS can play an important role in providing the necessary assurance of the competence, impartiality and consistency of assessing organisations and individuals at all stages of design, construction and maintenance of these and we look forward to continuing to work closely with Government as the Review’s recommendations are taken forward.
