UKAS is delighted to announce that Lorraine Turner, UKAS Accreditation Director, has been appointed as a member of the newly formed Interim Industry Competence Committee (IICC). The formation of the IICC coincides with the recent announcement of the Building Safety Bill in Parliament by Robert Jenrick MP, Secretary of State for Housing. The Bill outlines a programme of actions aimed at preventing a recurrence of the problems that contributed to the Grenfell Tower fire. Foremost amongst these measures is the creation of the Building Safety Regulator, to be fulfilled by the Health & Safety Executive.
The role of the IICC is to help guide and advise the HSE as it sets up the Building Safety Regulator.
Lorraine said: “I am looking forward to utilising my experience across a broad range of high risk sectors to feed into the IICC and provide advice on the different mechanisms that can be used to develop and assure competence to support the development and delivery of the Building Safety Programme. I am expecting the IICC to progress the valuable work started by the Competence Steering Group and others to assist the Building Safety Regulator in setting the strategy and develop the new regulatory regime. UKAS already plays a major role in providing trust and assurance in the construction sector and we will continue to explore how this can be utilised to support the objectives of the Building Safety Programme.”
