World Standards Day is celebrated annually to pay tribute to the collaborative efforts of volunteers worldwide who develop the technical agreements subsequently published as International Standards.
As well as acknowledging the input of these volunteers, World Standards Day raises awareness of the importance of standardization for safety and the global economy.
As the sole National Accreditation Body for the UK, UKAS delivers accreditation to a diverse range of sectors and industries against these recognised standards. The process ensures accepted levels of quality and safety are maintained and that the results of accredited certification, testing, inspection and calibration bodies are impartial, accurate and reliable.
UKAS recognises that the confidence accreditation brings to industry, business and the wider public is based on a framework comprising these International Standards, against which accredited organisations are assessed. As such it would be impossible for accreditation to exist without these important documents as a reference and guiding light for quality and competence.
An important aspect of what UKAS does is to ensure that businesses undergoing accreditation in the UK gain or retain access to international markets. Removing or lowering international trade barriers is one of the ways this can be achieved, and International Standards allow this to happen.
UKAS plays an active role internationally through our membership of EA, ILAC and IAF, participating in mutual recognition arrangements to ensure that when an organisation is accredited once, they are accepted everywhere.
Therefore, UKAS gives full support to World Standards Day as it works to increase awareness of the role that accreditation and international standards play in the context of global quality and continuous improvement.
The theme of World Standards Day for 2020 is ‘protecting the planet with standards’ and many of the standards in use today focus on best practices for reducing the carbon footprint of industry, saving energy and improving water and air quality for the benefit of all.
Speaking on the role UKAS plays in the implementation of these standards, Divisional Director – Technical, Rob Bettinson made the following statement:
“UKAS is proud of the part that we play in the global implementation of International Standards with the invisible presence they have in all our lives, working to keep us safe, protect the economy and preserve the environment.
The need for sustainability and to protect the planet’s finite resources grows exponentially alongside expanding populations. The standards that are continuously developed to enhance these protections and safeguards are of vital importance and World Standards Day gives us the opportunity to highlight this fact.”
